Could Dark Coloured Urination And Lower Abdominal Pain Be Due To Kidney Stones?

I was in the E.R. with severe pain last Sunday, they told me it was kidney stone, I have appointment next Wednesday with the specialist . But i see my urine turning dark again and have dull pain on my lower right side under my tummy, if i remember correctly that is how is started last time. Is this a sign for on other episode?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are going through.

The darkened color of urine is indicating:
- presence of blood in urine: sometimes, if stones will move, they will lacerate urinary tract mucosa resulting to bleeding (from light to severe) that would turn the color of urine to a darker one
- high concentration urine especially if you do not consume enough liquids
- infection as stones are commonly associating with infection.

Until you see the specialist, I advise to:
- drink plenty of water (around 3 liters/day)
- take fern stone tea as it is known to reduce the size of stones and clear the urinary pathways
- avoid salt and salty foods/drinks
- take OTC urine alkalinizers like magnesium citrate

Hope it was of help!
