Could Dementia In A Person Be Dependent On The Environment He Lives?
hi. i live in rome. my father in law who is 80, broke his femur. he has now been in geriatric hospital for over two months. and has been recently showing signs of dementia. could this be because he is regularly seeing people dying around him in ward? he eats ok, but drs say he prob wont walk again and needs a full time nursing home.
Hello. If the signs of dementia are seen for less than two months, you may want to discuss with the doctor about possibility of another condition. Dementia usually develops slowly over several months and symptoms must be present for at least six months to make the diagnosis. After fracture of femur, delirium is a common complication. In Delirium, there is disorientation, distractibility, hallucinations, sleep-wake cycle reversal and a fluctuating mental state. Hospitalization can be very stressful. It can cause depression. Depression may sometimes mimic dementia. Seeing people around dying is not directly going to cause dementia which is a neurodegenerative disorder. Based on information given by you, this is what can be said. I hope I have answered your question.
