Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is there any data suggesting a link between electrolyte imbalance and dehydration and depression? I suffer from major depressive disorder, which was aggravated by several weeks of secretory diarrhea. The latter seemed to be improving, so I stopped drinking pedialyte and resumed some activities that had been impossible because of the diarrhea. Shortly thereafter came very loose stools and markedly worsened depression. After two days of that, I resumed pedialite. The deep depression improved almost immediately. Thus, my question.
Hi, thank you for using health care magic. I can understand you concern. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance increases the stress over body which will reflect in many bodily changes mainly in hormonal changes and monoamines changes in brains. Stress worsens depression is a known fact, and so is stress removal improves depression. So your observation is right and i would see it in regards of stress rather then direct effect of electrolyte imbalance/dehydration on depression. Hope this will help you. Regards.
