Could Dizziness, Nausea And Palpitations Be The Side Effects Of Phentermine?

I have been taking Phentermine 37.5mg once a day for 3 weeks. I suffered a series of uncomfortable side effects the first 10 days which included: higher than normal blood pressure, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, nausea, extreme lethargy, palpitations, sever dry mouth, constipation, headaches, zero appetite and lower abdominal discomfort. In the 3rd week the majority of those symptoms disappeared; however I am still suffering from dry mouth, feeling as if my throat is closing which I correlate directly to the dry mouth, the lower abdominal pain, headaches, severe constipation and now I m experiencing new symptoms: my urine has been consistently dark amber in color with an ammonia/semi-sweet aroma. I ve always been one to drink a lot of water and I consume about a gallon a day; however, my urine is still the amber color with the unusual aroma. Is this a normal side effect or should I be concerted?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best possible way. Your are suffering from the adverse effects of phentermine. Dry mouth, constipation and abdominal pain are more common side effects as this drug dries all the secretions of the gut leading to these problems.

Normal urine colour varies from yellow to dark amber depending upon how concentrated the urine is. As phentermine is an anorectic, i suppose your appetite has been suppressed even for fluids which is causing the change of colour. It is nothing to worry and can be corrected by consciously increasing fluid intake.

As far as you do not have any burning in urination or difficulty in urination or any fever you are good. If you have such problems consult your doctor immediately.

You may even take laxatives like isabgul, husk and others to help with your constipation. Increased fluid intake will also help you in that. You may even talk to your doctor regarding dose modification of the medication or even try a substitute for some time if your symptoms are distressing you.
