Could Having Strep Infection Cause Light Headedness While Standing Up?

Hi, can I answer your health question? Please type your question here... I am light headed when I stand up and I usually need to close my eyes for a few moments before I can continue walking. Also recently I thought I had strep until I spit up two blood circles I don’t know if these two are related

Hello,

welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service. I've gone through your query and I can say that an infection caused by Streptococcus is not supposed to present this way. Lightheadedness when standing up from the recumbent or sitting position is usually caused either by postural hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure that normalizes very fast) or positional vertigo (which usually lasts for seconds). I can't say more about that without examining you first. Your doctor can examine you and confirm or exclude postural hypotension easily.

Regarding the blood more investigation may be required. If you have rhinitis or any other disorder that explains the presence of blood then you can just 'wait and see'. Otherwise investigation would be required starting with an inspection of the upper respiratory tract (an ENT can check the most distant parts of it) in search for inflammation, tumors or other causes of bleeding. If there's no lesion in the upper respiratory tract then the lower respiratory tract will have to be assessed starting with radiological tests (chest X-ray and perhaps CT-scan).

A less common cause of spitting blood is upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This disorder is not uncommon but this type of presentation is. We usually expect a patient with serious bleeding to vomit blood or to exhibit signs of serious hypotension (cold sweating, faintness, tachycardia, thirst, etc) and melena (shiny, smelly, tarry, liquid black stool).

In any case don't forget to discuss these matters with your primary care physician! Distant consultation is not a substitute for a real visit to your doctor for the reasons I've implied above.

I hope I've answered your query! Let me know if I can further assist you.

Kind Regards!
