Could Mild Itching And Vaginal Discharge Indicate Vaginosis And Yeast Infection?

I went to my health center on campus because i have VERY mild occasional itching when my vagina discharges (its been like this for 3 weeks since having unprotected sex where my partner came inside me)-- So i got checked out and the nurse prac said i have bacterial vaginosis AND a yeast infection! so i got prescribed 2 different antibiotics. i did some research and my symptoms are much more consistent with BV than with a yeast infection..do you think i was over prescribed?

Hello,

You are suffering from mild itching and vaginal discharge, you got checked by a nurse practitioner & was diagnosed to have BV, bacterial vaginosis. You are suggested to get wet mount test under a microscope, whiff test by a GP, test vaginal pH test done to confirm diagnosis of BV. BV is commonly treated with a course of metronidazole that is taken orally. If needed tinidazole is also prescribed depending upon the symptoms.

Vaginal suppositories are prescribed that are to be applied inside the vagina at bed time, applying clindamycin cream is effective. Metronidazole is also available as a topical gel that you can insert into your vagina on alternate nights till the infection clears out. It is effective. Avoid douching. It changes the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina.

Avoid vaginal contact with anything that has touched your anus like toilet paper, sex toys, etc., as it can transfer bacteria found in your poop to your vagina. Make sure sexual toys are properly cleaned after every use. Avoid multiple sex partners. Use latex condoms or dental dams. Always perform safe sex.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
