Could Painful, Red, Swollen Toe After A Fall Indicate Sprain?

I fell face down on concrete after my right shoe got hung up in a piece of plastic. Now, my right, big toe is red and swollen and painful to walk on. I am able to avoid most of the pain by not putting pressure on my big toe. Is this just a sprain? This happened about 24 hours ago. Should I seek medical attention or just use ice and keep off of my foot as much as possible? Bonnie

Hello Bonnie,

Its good that you soaked it in ice , but it would be better now to seek medical attention as there could be a hairline fracture which require you to restrict movement of the toe , in addition you need to take a 3 to 5 day course of anti-inflammatory meds , so its better to consult with an orthopaedic (bone and joint specialist ) as soon as possible. take care and keep healthy.
