Could Persistent Fever Be Due To Virus In Liver?

My 27 year old son has been dealing with high temperatures that have spiked to 104 degrees. He spent 5 days in the hospital and they tell us he has a virus in the liver? Many tests have been done and so far all hepatitis viruses have been eliminated. Many blood tests, CT scan have been done and still they tell us it points to a virus of the liver. He has gone back to work and the fever is better but this weekend he is back to temps spiking to 10 degrees? He has been dealing with this for over 3 weeks, do viruses take that long to get through the body?
