Could Physical Therapy Bring Relief From Paralysis Caused By Stroke?

Joseph is a 59-year-old construction worker who recently suffered a stroke. A small blood clot became lodged in one of the vessels serving the right side of his brain and restricted blood flow to a portion of his right precentral gyrus. Many neurons in that area were damaged or destroyed and, as a result, Joseph is partially paralyzed on the left side of his body. He is able to move his left leg and walk, and can also move his left arm, but his left hand and the left side of his face are paralyzed. Answer the following questions about the case study: Why were Joseph s left face and hand paralyzed, but not the rest of his arm or his leg? What is preventing Joseph from moving his left hand? In your answer, include the following: First, describe normal function of a motor neuron that forms a synapse with a muscle cell. How is the signal that initiates movement transmitted from the neuron to the muscle? Describe this process in detail. Next, keeping in mind that the motor neuron itself is not damaged, explain how damage or destruction of a neuron that communicates with the motor neuron prevents Joseph from moving his hand. With time, and perhaps some physical therapy, Joseph may recover some of the movement in his left hand and face. What factors might contribute to this recovery? In your answer, include the following: Why can t Joseph s brain simply replace those neurons that were damaged and destroyed by the stroke? How might compensation allow Joseph to regain some of his lost movement? Describe at least one experimental treatment that might improve movement in Joseph s case, and explain how this treatment would impact Joseph s nervous system.

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
As per your questions here to many things you have ask. It's difficult to type everything here but I am trying my level best.

1. Physical therapy will definitely help him through some techniques like PNF therapy, motor relearning program, muscle stimulation. And few more balance, coordination exercises with strengthening exercise.
2. The body area which are affected is based on where there is a damage in brain and which side of the brain affected. So as per your explanation I understand his left hand and leg is having problem means his right side of the brain is affected. And as per the level of damage he has lost the movement. As well it's common once some body gets stroke mainly the hand and leg movement and that is also fine movements are affected first with balance and coordination issues.
3. Now to answer next thing that it can be regenerated or not. So my answer is once we have any kind of damage for Central nervous system the cells can not regenerate here. There is no regeneration power with central nervous system. But as a human we are not using our brain on a optimal way. So there is still chances of relearning. Here the other part of brain which is not affected we can teach to take care of the function of affected part of the brain. Remember still the part of disability will be continue as per the severity of stroke attack
Hope this was useful to you. Take care...
