Could Smoking And Being Overweight Contribute To Elevated LDL And HDL Level On Lipid Profile?

Hi Doctor,
I recently got my lipid profile done. It shows my LDL at 172 and my HDL at 35, MY VLDL is at 42. I just want to understand if these are highly alarming levels?
P.S. - I am 31, I am not overweight, round about 6'0 Feet tall and i weigh 78.5 kgs. I do have a smoking history, I have however left it now.
Thanking you in anticipation doctor.

Hello dear,

The tests such as Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL are grouped as lipid profile tests, which determine the risk of coronary heart disease in an individual.
The results of the lipid profile are considered along with other known risk factors of heart disease to develop a plan of treatment and follow-up.

Since your blood investigations revealed increase in LDL & you have a history of smoking, they act as risk factors for Cardiovascular diseases.
But it is appreciable to know that you have left smoking.
You need to take certain measures related to Lifestyle & Diet such as regular exercise, reduced consumption of carbohydrates, increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish oil) & a diet enriched with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and legumes.

Repeat your Lipid profile after 30 days. If the values are on the higher side even with Diet & Lifestyle modification, then you will have to take medications to normalize the values.

Kindly discuss regarding this with your treating Physician.
Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
