Could Swollen Bruise On Arm Post A Fall While On Coumadin Be Internal Bleed?
Hello. My mother is on Coumadin because she has an artificial heart valve. Today she fell and hurt her arm. There is a nasty bruise the size of a baseball, and it is severely bulged out. How do we tell if she is bleeding internally or just has a bruise?
Your mother is on Coumadin and has history of being on artificial heart valve. She fell down and is presently having a bruise in her arm. Since your mother is on Coumadin, has artificial heart valve and had a fall; you are suggested to get her clinically examined by her treating physician / cardiologist. Get repeat tests, investigations and imaging tests done to confirm everything is fine.
If not, she will be managed accordingly and the pathology detected will be treated. In the meantime, you can apply a thick layer of Ointment Thrombophob topically on the area affected by the bruise. It will help to reduce the swelling / inflammation and reduce the size of the bruise.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
