Could Swollen Sinuses Injure Eardrums On Hiking At High Altitudes?
My grandson broke his nose today while horsing around at camp. We had a hike planned next in the Rockies. The ER doctor where he was treated told him that she should not hike at high altitudes. He was told with swollen sinuses it could injure his ear drums. Is this a correct diagnosis? Thanks.
During hiking, the difference in pressure between your inner ear and the outside environment can cause damage that leads to tinnitus or hearing loss. You can avoid these effects by chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, swallowing or yawning as you change altitudes. So, better to postpone it until full recovery.
