Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could The Constant Cough Be Due To The Acid Reflux?
My husband is 64 years old. He has an almost constant cough primarily from mucus in his throat area. General practitioner says his lung are clear when he has gone to see them for a bad cold and congestion. However this cough seems to relate to acid reflux more than any type of bronchial or breathing problems. What type of doctor/specialist should he see for acid reflux questions? An ENT doctor?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your husband - 64 years - constant cough primarily from mucus in his throat, lungs clear as said by GP - seems to be related to acid reflux, wants to know which type of Doctor to see... As per the history you have provided, your husband needs to see a Gastroenterologist if the upper GI Endoscopy is needed and an ENT for clinical evaluation, examination and laryngo-pharyngoscopy. In the meantime you can give him the following: PPI like Omeprazole. Antacid liquid every three hours. Domperidone to regularize the motility and avoid the reflux. Stop alcohol, tobacco in any form if he is taking. Soft bland diet. Nasal decongestant drops followed by steam inhalations. Rest of the investigations and management as per the Specialist's opinion.
