Could Thick, Sticky Vaginal Discharge Post Menopause Indicate Infection?
I have a thick somewhat sticky vaginal discharge. I m post menopause and haven t had any discharge at all for at least 2 years. I have no other symptoms. MD suggested taking probiatics, and I haven t noticed it improving. Could it be a sign of something worse than a vaginal infection?
Even though discharge might be perfectly normal at menopause, it may get more thick and sticky due to dryness of the vagina. Sticky discharge helps to keep the germs and infection away from the vagina and vulva. Sometimes, such symptoms are due bacterial or yeast infections.
Since the vaginal mucosa is dry and sensitive, you can also develop vaginal and vulvar irritation due to soaps and hygiene products. Do not uses any harsh soap or chemical products in your private area. Use vaginal lubricants for local application and take vitamin E rich food or supplements (Evion - 400), once daily for 15-20 days. Stay well hydrated. Continue to take probiotics and take care of your hygiene. Wear cotton undies. Take regular bath.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
