Depression After Death, Unable To Stay Out For Long. Why?

Hi, My mother-in-law still grieves for her deceased husband who passed away 11 years ago. I don't know if this is related. Recently when she leaves her home (she lives with her daughter and family) no sooner she arrives at a family function or visit, she wants to leave to return home. Her granddaughter recently was married and as soon as she could, she left the wedding reception. Is this just part of growing old, she is 81, or part of depression. We hardly hear from her. She doesn't call or visit.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello
Welcome to HCM

In normal situation grief after death of a near one remains for about 6 months and if it get prolonged then it may lead to pathological grief or may be depressive disorder. Depression is a common reason for prolonged grief. She is showing withdrawn behavior and poor social interaction, most likely these symptoms are due to depression. I would advise you to take her to a Psychiatrist for expert opinion. Medicines like SSRI and SNRI are very useful. Cognitive therapy is also useful.

Thanks
