hi i m 17 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with klebsiella urinary tract infection sensitive to ceftriaxone . since it needs to be taken i.v and also because i fear medications affecting my baby i did not take any. i am otherwise asymptomatic though i used to experience a bit of dyspareunia and mild pain during micturation very rarely. what risks am i imposing to my baby or to my self as my pregnancy progresses? please suggest.
Hi,
diagnosis of a urinary tract infection during pregnancy is an indication of treatment. About 7 % of women have asymptomatic bacterial infections. the risk is these women can develop kidney infections which are important risk factors for the mothers first for she can get into a state of septicemia and septic shock and the risk of having an abortion is also raised.
Doing a urine culture and antiobiotic sensitivity tests to treat this infection is important. I suggest you visit your gynecologist for advise and examination.
Thanks and hope this helps,
Luchuo, MD.
