Difficulty In Swallowing, Feeling Saliva In Throat. Had A Stroke Recently. Need Advice

I recently had a stroke and now have trouble swallowing and feel there is thick saliva in back of throat .. It panics me and I drink water all the time to assist in swallowing. Is this due to numbness in throat where stroke occurred? Left side. I am up walking, driving, etc..but this is my most aggravating problem from the incident. Email: YYYY@YYYY

Hello. It is a very common problem to have difficulty in swallowing following a stroke. As the hands and legs are affected in stroke, so are the muscles of throat which are required for swallowing. The good part, however, is that most patients will recover from it as the non-damaged area of the brain takes over the function. Speech pathologists, who also assess swallowing function, can evaluate you and can give you advises like head and neck position while eating, consistency of food item, size of the food bolus and some exercises. All these should definitely help you and will accelerate your recovery. Wish you good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for query,
Your stroke develoed any hemiplegia or monoplegia.
Many times due to paralysis of pharangeal muscle one side in hemiplegia or monplegia you can not swallow properly.
There are chances that you may engulf your food in trachea too.
If you recovered from your paralysis a physiotheraphy of pharangeal muscle will help to restore its function.
Thanks.
