Stroke Patient,thickened Saliva,difficulty Swallowing,phlegm Accumulated In Throat
My husband is ill - Stroke patient and has thickened saliva . How can I assist him ...he has difficulty swallowing . He suffered a brain stem stroke/ subsequent right side and left side stroke. He suffers a swallowing disorder and has accumulated phlegm in his throat . ahow can I assist him
Hi, Thanks for using Healthcaremagic, After going through the available details, as he has suffered double stroke left and right sided stroke.
It is called pseudobulbar palsy and there is difficulty in swallowing and throat secretions are likely to accumulate in throat.
Usually such patients are given feeding through nasogastric tube I presume he must be taking feeds by tube.
The best way to keep throat clean is by nursing patient in lateral position to drain saliva out side and keep mouth clean by mouth wash.
It can also be cleaned by suction of throat by suction machine with he help of catheter for which you need to help of trained nurse and you need to learn the process.
It can get easily infected.so utrmost care is required and if necessary anti biotics and anti fungal are also require. Hope this information helps.
Tke very good care. Good Luck. Dr.Akhilesh Dubey M.D.
