Difficulty In Walking, Dizziness. EF Redone. How Long Can I Work Before Heart Transplant?

My ejection fraction in november was at 22% I have had an icd for 15yrs. I am 59 yrs old female. I have noticed more difficulty walking. I get out of breath sooner and slightly dizzy. I just had my EF redone 3 days ago. I have not heard the results yet. I am a little worried. How low can the EF go before you need to have a heart transplant. At present I work full time at a desk. I want to know how long I will be able to do this.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear patient,

Thanks for your health concerns. Usually, it is more the symptoms despite maximal medical therapy that dictate the consideration for transplant. What we usually do is try to maximize medications as much as tolerated, many people qualify for an upgrade of the ICD called CRT to synchronize the heart... and after those, if still having symptoms with minimal activity or rest then LVAD or transplant is considered.

You would benefit from seeing a cardiologist who is a subspecialist in advanced heart failure..

Truly yours,
