Hello Doc! I seek your invaluable guidance. My wife has had an ear infection since quite a few years, and in mid 2010 she had to undergo a mastoidectomy. We consulted a couple of doctors including the one who performed the surgery, and both had advised a mastoidectomy. For 6-7 months post surgery, my wife was fine and there was no discharge from the ear, and we did our periodic follow ups with the surgeon Dr. KVSSR Sastry in Yashoda Hopspital Hyderebad, India who had performed the surgery. Before she had foul smelling discharge on and off, and ear drops and medicines used to tend to the problem, but probably not cure or eradicate it. Coming back to the post operative period, after 6-7 months, she again had discharge from her ear. Initially the Doctor shocked us by recommending another surgery, and what was more shocking was that inspite of operating the patient, and the follow up visits, he had forgotten that he had performed the surgery. He asked us to get a scan done, and then when reminded that he had already operated the patient before, he profusely apologized, and suggested some medicines and candibiotic drops. These drops didn t suit my wife, and he then recommended some other drops which i don t remember, maybe genticin, and said that she was fine and no need for further follow up visits. In Dec 2012, my wife had a throat infection, and that led to heaviness in the head, and blockage of both the ears. We happened to be in our hometown, and saw another doctor, who recommended some medicines which worked well,However, he later suggested us another doctor in the city where we work, and said that surgery might be required. We got busy, and only visited the referred doctor a couple of days back, and he recommended surgery as well.He said that he can t comment, but most probably the previous surgery wasn t successful. He said it was God s grace that the infection didn t spread a lot post surgery during the 2+ year period, and asked us to get the mastoidectomy done at our earliest convenience. I m attaching all the reports, and seek your guidance as well. My wife is a bit apprehensive since this is the second surgery recommended for the same purpose. Please let us know your advice, and help dispell our fears and apprehensions.Thank you - Vivek Jacob
