Dizziness, Abdominal Pain, Recurring Fever, Swollen Fluid Under Ribs. History Of IBS, Diverticulitis. Treatment?

I am a nurse and the worse patient. I have had nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, abdominal pain, fever on and off for three weeks and the last few days a swollen fluid like area just under the ribs and full feeling. I have a history of diverticulitis, ibs and was not sure if this could be one of those, but i have also had the throbbing midline above the navel for four or more years. My back is hurting and the abdominal swelling is such that it is causing a burning sensation on the skin???

Hello, thanks for contacting HCM. I agree with you that
doctors, especially medical students and nurses are not too
good as patients ! You do have history of diverticulitis and this
seems to be more frequent in your case. This certainly can be
associated with IBS. I am sure that you have had endoscopic
evaluations done and they have ruled out any inflammatory
bowel disease. The current thinking about preventing recurrent
diverticulitis is, staying on a high fiber diet. This reduces the
number of attacks and the severity. Other newer suggestion is
going on a cource of antibiotics such as Rifaxamine or Mesalamine
for 2 weeks once a month for 3 months and repeating the cycle.
Check with your doctor or gastroenterologist about this.
Wish you well.
