Hi Jennifer,
The main ingredient of Monster energy drink is Caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the
central nervous system of our body in a way coffee does (as coffee also contains caffeine) and so the person consuming it feels fresh or energized. Due to this caffeine content of the drink, it is advised not to exceed 48 oz of the drink per day.
Other ingredients of this drink like carbonated water, glucose, sucrose,
sodium chloride etc are not in the amount that they can individually cause any adverse effects on the body. There is still no solid proof regarding the interactions of these agents with each other that can cause beneficial or adverse effects on the body. Surely, there is no cancer-causing agent in the drink.
However, Monster energy drink has been quite a controversial topic in medical science. There have been 5-6 accusations on this energy drink for deaths of people after consuming too much of it, though no direct link between drink and death is proved yet. India has banned sale of this drink in May 2015 for containing both caffeine and ginseng.
Overall, too frequent consumption of energy drinks can cause many adverse effects other than cancer like cardiac problems,
headaches, anxiety, insomnia, addiction to them,
diabetes,
vomiting,
high blood pressure etc.
So to conclude, even though it cannot cause
lung cancer or any other cancer, there are many reasons to avoid regular consumption of it. A cup of coffee once in a while will still be better than taking too many energy drinks.
I hope this information helps. Thank you choosing Health Care Magic.
Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
