Do Digestive Enzymes Help In Easing Glucose Galactose Malabsorption?
Hi, my name is Eva and my son (2) has Glucose galactose malabsorption. Do you know if digestive enzymes could help to ease this condition? I am also worried that in time he might have some renal or cardiovascular problems. So far he seems very healthy and is growing just fine on his fructose based diet. Thank you

Unfortunately, digestive enzymes cannot help to ease galactose-glucose malabsorption. Digestive enzymes only help to break down sugars (e.g. disaccharides polysaccharides) into their simplest forms: glucose, galactose and fructose before the absorption from the gut.
In galactose-glucose malabsorption there is a deficiency of transport enzyme called SGLT1 (sodium glucose transport protein) which responsible for the absorption of glucose and galactose from the gut.
Digestive enzymes do not participate in the absorption process therefore cannot help in galactose-glucose malabsorption.
