Does Allopurinol Cause Severe Peripheral Neuropathy?
I have been taking Allopurinol for about 35 years. Initially 300 mg for years and for the last 10 years 200mg daily. I am not diabetic and I am under medication for high blood pressure.I have severe PN and my Neurologist feels that myPN was caused by long term Allopurinol. I ve stopped taking it for about a month. What do you think?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Neuropathy is a very very rare side effect of Allopurinol, which usually makes the pain and stiffness worse during gout attack. In your case, if the neuropathy has been subsided a month later from last pill, then Allopurinol should be blame. If not, obviously further investigations are needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
