Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Amantadine Contain Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor(MAOI)?
Does Amantadine contain any MAOI? I wanted to take a cold/caugh medicine for controlling my cough. The box says that I shouldn t take Mucinex if I am taking any MAOI. I also take Selegiline which, I just found out is an MAOI. Unfortunately, I took one Mucinex just now before I read the box. Do I need to do something to protect me. Please advise. Thanks Gopal Gupta
Hi & Welcome to HCM. I can understand your concern. 1. Amantadine is neither a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor nor it contains MAO-inhibitor. 2. Selegeline is a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
Mucinex (Guaifenesin) when taken along with Selegiline can increase the serotonin levels in the blood. Too much serotonin is a potentially life-threatening situation. Severe signs and symptoms include high blood pressure and increased heart rate that can lead to shock. Kindly visit your treating doctor for close monitoring of the vital signs (heart rate and BP.). Hope this will help.
