Is Mirtazapine A Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor?

I have been prescribed Mirtazapine as a sleep aid. Is it a monoamine oxidase inhibitor? I ask because I was about to take some OTC cold medicine, and it cautions against taking it if you also are taking an MAOI -- and for two weeks after stopping the MAOI. Thank you.

Hi,

Yes, you are right.
Cough and cold medicines are usually contain a combination of several active ingredients that may interact with monoamine oxydase inhibitors (MAOI). MAOI can cause serious reactions when taken together with those cough and cold medicines. If the OTC cold medicine patient information leaflet states not to take together with MAOI you should never combine them. Yes, it is recommended that there be a 2-week wash-out before administration the drug that may possibly interact with MAOI.

Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you.
