Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can oral Amiodarone complicate management of type II diabetes. I am using Lantus with a sliding scale of Novolog and was keeping my sugars under pretty good control. Since I had CABG surgery a month ago, I was put on Amiodarone for control of a-fib. While in the hospital, the docs changed my insulin regimen. My endocrinologist and I have been in weekly contact about my blood glucose but are finding it hard to get the sugars under half-way decent control. I am wondering if the Amiodarone (only new med since surgery) can interact with either Lantus or Novolog. Thanks
It is always a good idea to think about medications we are taking whenever we start having a new medical problem. In this case, however, Amiodarone does not affect blood sugars or interfere with Lantus or Novolog.
Sometimes after surgery, the stress on our body can affect our blood sugar and insulin levels, and this may be what is happening with you, though after a month I would expect your blood sugars to stabilize. Regardless, you are on the right track having close monitoring by your endocrinologist, and over time I would expect your blood sugar control will improve.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
