Does BRAT Diet Cause Constipation?

My doctor put me on a special diet because of pains in my abdomen and back and groin. It was 2 days of clear liquids and on the third day, the BRAT diet. Because I m having the pain and nausea, I kept up the BRAT diet on yesterday, the fourth day. I was sent for a C T Scan and waiting to hear back. My question is I haven t had a bowel movement in 3 days, is that normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Decreased intake can cause a decrease in the frequency of bowel movements.

This means that since you are not using enough solid food, there would be a decrease in your bowel movements.
In general, however, constipation is defined as less than 3 bowel movements a week , which usually works out to less than 3 days.

You can consider trying to increase your fiber and fluid intake to see if this helps
At least 5 servings of fiber a day would help with your bowel movements.

I hope this helps
