Carotid ultrasound only detects the narrowing of the main carotid arteries. This is frequently done in people who have a stroke or a transient ischemic attack. While narrowing of these vessels suggests that vessels in other places ( like the heart0 may be narrowed too, it cannot reliably detect the status of affairs in the heart.
Also, a CT angiogram and a echocardiogram is the best non invasive way of telling the status of the vessels.
