Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 85 year old mother was diagnosed with a high white cell count in her blood at doc visit today. And she was given cephalexin, 500 mg. A seven day supply. She took her first dose at 7:45 p.m. this evening and is not experiencing some serious nausea that began around 9:00 p.m. She has had a reaction to penicillin in the past. Her skin broke out. Should I make her as comfortable as possible and wait on the nausea to subside? Should she take something for the nausea? Suggestions? Should she discontinue the cephalexin until Monday when she can contact her doctor for further instructions? Thank you. Her daughter, Robin
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems like that nausea feeling is a side effect of Cephalexin and it is a common side effect seen on taking antibiotics.. Skin rashes or breakouts seems to be allergic reaction to Penicillin while mild nausea is not a severe side effect.. But considering her age it has to be taken care of and you should consult your treating physician and get her evaluated so that he can reduce the dose of the medicine.. Se can also take medicine like Domperidone to relieve nausea.. Taking tart candies and lemon drops will also help in relieving nausea..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora.
