Does Coumadin Cause Low Urine Output?

My 93 year old father was recently diagnosed with a sonogram of a DVT in his L groin area (vein) He was prescribed coumadin. The swelling in his leg hasn't decreased (only on coumadin for 2 dosages) but his urine output is very low or non-existent. Is there a correlation?

Hi and thanks for this query.

There is no correlation between coumadins and low urine output. If he has no difficulties urinating, it will suggest that you provide him with enough fluids to drink. You need average 2liters of fluid per day and elderlies may not have enough because of their relative dependence on others to serve them. If after giving enough water this stays same, please seek for immediate medical attention as this could be a sign of acute renal failure.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information if needed.
