Is Antihistamine Advisable Along With Clexane Injections?

Can I take an antihistamine while taking clexane injections? I have what I think is a mild reaction to the drug some facial itching and redness around the eyes ears ad mouth. I m 27 and I am suffering from sciatica and as a result of reduced mobility I developed lower left leg DVT. I have only had one injection nearly eight hours ago but these symptoms are only now occurring. I have to have another injection tomorrow.

Hello,

You are having itching and rashes around the mouth, ears, eyes. You have history of sciatica and also DVT. Your treating doctor has prescribed you Clexane injections. Clexane is an enoxaparin, an anticoagulant that helps prevent the formation of blood clots.

Enoxaparin is used to treat or prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). A DVT commonly occurs after certain types of surgery, or in people who are bed-ridden due to a prolonged illness. Since you have another injection tomorrow, do not take any medicines on your own. It may interfere with clexane and cause complications. Consult with your treating doctor.

You are suggested to wash your face thoroughly with clean water and there after apply a thin layer of lacto-calamine lotion on the affected area. Applying a thin layer of ointment hydrocortisone on the affected area will prevent itching. Do not touch or scratch. Applying aloe vera gel or Dermadew ointment on the affected area are also helpful to reduce rashes, itching, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
