Does Diclofenac Interact With Losartan?

Regarding drug called diclofenac: I heard it was an anti-inflammatory; it helped my sister a lot. I wanted to investigate it for my arthritis in my back. I am already taking losartan for blood pressure. the article mentioned losartan as interacting with this drug. can you further explain the degree of interaction and whether I could take this if my doctor approved?

Yes, Diclofenac can interact with Losartan. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which works by decreasing prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are essential in the sense that they maintain blood supply in the kidneys and also required for the BP lowering effects of drugs like Losartan.

Diclofenac may reduce the BP lowering effects of Losartan by decreasing the prostaglandins formation. In addition, it may also affect your kidney function, especially when they are used together frequently or chronically. You are more likely to develop impaired kidney function during treatment with these medications if you are elderly or have preexisting kidney disease.

So, it is better to avoid taking Diclofenac while taking Losartan. You may request your treating doctor for an alternate effective drug like paracetamol for the pain relief.
