Does IBS Cause Lower Backache And Weakness In The Hips?

I have had lower left abdomen discomfort and lower back pain for a number of months. Diagnosed as IBS. I also have noticed reduced range of motion in my left hip and am now getting a strange sensation in my left thigh, almost like a muscle pull. Could these be related? Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your clinical history, is concerned irritable bowel syndrome has no relation with a hip so please follow like this-
1) Do a clinical examination by an orthopedic doctor and to confirm do MRI scan.
2) Do take over-the-counter painkiller Ibuprofen and consult with your physio for a specific exercise plan.
Do follow lifestyle modifications like this-
1) Do exercise regularly. Exercise can increase your endurance and strengthen the muscles around your joint, making your joint more stable. If you feel new joint pain, stop.
2) Try to lose weight. Being overweight or obese increases the stress on your weight-bearing joints, such as your knees and your hips. Even a small amount of weight loss can relieve some pressure and reduce your pain.
3) Use heat and cold to manage pain. Both heat and cold can relieve pain in your joint. Heat also relieves stiffness, and cold can relieve muscle spasms and pain.
4) Apply over-the-counter pain creams. Creams and gels available at drugstores may provide temporary relief from pain.
5) Discuss with your doctor about the use of assistive devices.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
