Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is getting off prescription opiads prescribed for pain in the hospital. The are switching him to methodone but he is also on klonopin for anxiety. He is also on tegretol for seizures and gababpentin for nerve pain. i was told the klonopin and gabapentin help with seizures too. I was told by someone that taking klonopin and methodone is dangerous? Is this true or are the doctors correct in treating him this way?
Both Methadone and Klonopin can cause sedation and drowsiness, and your son should be monitored for these symptoms.
However, there is the same risk with taking opiate medications and Klonopin, so if the purpose of the methadone is to help him stop opiates, it would be appropriate to use.
Gabapentin can also cause drowsiness and sedation, so he is at higher risk for this complication. He certainly should not take any other medications or drugs that could depress his nervous system, such as alcohol.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
