I have been on citalopram 20mg for the past 20 years and have been suffering with an increase in my symptoms of depression and my doctor has suggested Mirtazapine. I am terrified of putting on weight as i have poor body image anyway. can you tell me if weight gain happens to all people on this med
Yes, Mirtazapine causes weight gain. The reason behind it causing weight gain is supposed to be that it increases the apetite and it also increases craving for carbohydrates.
This effect is not seen in all the patients. It causes weight gain in both short term use and long term. The exact mechanism behind Mirtazipine causing is not clearly studied though.
Hope this helps!
Best Regards Dr Chaithanya
