Does Mycoplasma Infection Cause Pericardial Effusion?
my father is 94 years old with a very bright mind and strong body. he has recently developed an atypical pneumonia probably mycoplasma after a period of increasing fatigue of2-3 months duration. he developed a sudden onset of intense weakness and had a ecg which showed atrial fibrillation after which he was admitted to hospital and had an echocardiogram with an cardioversion which reverted his heart to regular sinus rhythm however upon being sent home on amioderone he developed a fever and returned to hospital and was treated for atypical pneumonia. he subsequently developed pleural effusions in both lungs with extreme breathlessness and a pericardial effusion. his one effusion was drained which gave him a significant relief from his breathlessness. he is about to have a procedure which involves sending a catheter into his heart to use high frequency sound to ablate some part of his electrical pathways to try and stop his atrial flutter (though not atrial fibrillation) as he fluctuates between sinus rhythm and AF. my question to you is could all of this be cause by mycoplasma ? also suddenly yesterday he developed extreme restlessness and agitation whilst in hospital - he has been there now for about a week - do you have any ideas what this kind of relentlessness could be caused by - psychological? iatrogenic? anxiety? he gets some relief when my mother comes to be with him - they have a loving and very close relationship but nevertheless cannot keep still and keeps changing positions from chair to bed and cannot feel comfortable anywhere - he says he cannot find a place of rest for himself . i have suggested valium but the doctor in charge says no for fear off confusion and unsteadiness. many questions - i wonder what your thoughts are? do i need to let go and accept that this may be his path of demise? thank you ewa
