Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking valsartan in the 160 mg and my doctor has prescribed an increase of the dosage to 320mg and separated the water pill to take separately. When I take the 160 with 25 mg water pill at night - my mouth gets extremely dry....Now I am wondering if the valsartan by itself at night will give me a dry mouth or if it is the water pill that causes that?
Water pill or diuretic is also seen to cause dry mouth as a side effect and in case if you are taking both together, they tend to cause a severe dry mouth..
Consult your physician and get evaluated in case if dose reduction is possible it can help in reducing severity of symptoms..
For relief from dry mouth you can suck tart candies and sugar free chewing gum.. Artificial saliva drops can be instilled in mouth for lubrication.. Use a humidifier in your room while sleeping as it will keep air moist and lessen dryness..
In night you can apply Xylitol patches on mucosa inside mouth as they will maintain a coating inside mouth and relieve dry mouth..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
