Does A Cortisone Shot Cause Swelling In The Left Arm?

My dad is 84 years old and a heart patient. He has always been and still is very active. Gardens and operates a lawn mower repair shop. He recently went and got a cortisone shot in his left shoulder for some shoulder discomfort and several days after the injection his left hand has swollen. It is swollen to the point that he cannot close it or use it. Extremely dark in color and has had a fever. We took him to his doctor two weeks ago and there was no elevation of white blood cells, so they ruled out infection. They did an ultra sound on his veins and arteries and found a small blood clot in his left armpit area. They put him on a blood thinner and also gave him an antibiotic just in case there was an infection. His hand went down some and for a few days he had some relief. This morning is is swollen even more than before and he has finished all the antibiotics. Could this swelling be from the cortisone shot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to blood clots.
The cortisone shot does not cause exaggerate swelling in the arm.
I suggest you to do further examinations for evaluation and proper treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
