Does A PSA Level Of 8 Need Immediate Medical Attention?

My boyfriend's PSA is 8. Dr. Recommend a biopsy. He wanted a 2nd opinion. He's having a hard time of this & doesnt want to talk about it. He has withdrawn & i don't know how to reach him. I had my right kidney removed last yr due a malignant tumor & know how scary this can be. Should i reach out to him or just wait. I know he's full of anxiety.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern
Normal range of PSA: Bening/malignant: 4-10 ng/ml
Malignant: >10 ng/ml.

As your level is between 4 to 10 ng/ml, its should be investigated for rule out the malignancy.
It also due to benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis.
You can also go for the free PSA and form that % of free PSA or fPSA:PSA ratio, USG scan or MRI for any mass and enlargement of the prostate.
Less ratio suggests more chance of the malignancy.
But confirmatory is USG guided transrectal biopsy.
So you can go above tests before going to Biopsy.
Avoid stress and consult the urologist an problem is treatable.
Hope this may help you
