Does A Long Gap In Intercourse Affect Menstrual Cycle?

I have gone without sex for three years. I had sex a day before I started my period. Normally my period is heavy and I she d alot of tissue. I have only been spotting. Did having sex after so long affect my period? From what I have read since my period is like clock work it would be unlikely for me to be pregnant. Is that true?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Having sex frequently or not will not affect periods. Menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones progesterone and estrogen. Normally ovulation takes place by 13 to 17th day, counted from the day of menstruation. This is called as 'fertile' period. Chances of getting pregnant is more if you have sex during this period.
Kindly check your hemoglobin levels as sometimes anaemia may precipitate heavy bleeding and vice versa heavy bleeding leads to anaemia. If your hemoglobin levels is low, you can take a course of iron preparation tablets, which should make your condition better.
