Does A Worsening Rash From A Large Spider Bite Require Medical Attention?

Hello, this is Mary from Enid, Oklahoma. 48 hrs ago, my 35 yr old daughter was bit by a large black spider with blue triangles on it. There is a red area about the size of a tennis ball diameter, but the center has turned black. Two hrs ago, she said she has 2 elongated welps (which she said started out as a rash) on her upper arm. Do we need to go to the ER now? She wants to wait until tomorrow morning. She has mental illness and I think is unaware of the damage from spider bites, but I also don't want to panic and jump the gun. Thank you, Mary Morgan

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

The red area with black centre is an indication of allergic reaction at the site of spider bite and if the rash and welps are progressing to spread then you should not wait and immediately consult an Emergency room..

There is a possibility that the stinger is still embedded under the skin that is causing allergic reaction to worsen..

She can be advised a steroid shot to reduce the symptoms faster by suppressing the allergic reaction..
Oral anti allergic medicines and steroids can also be advised..
You can also apply steroid ointment at the site of bite..
Do cool compresses..
If there is itching avoid scratching to prevent infection..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
