Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Blockage In Parotid Duct Elevate The Amylase Level?
My Amylase reading was 472 a few days ago. I went to the Doctor because, after googling, it appeared that I have a parotid duct blockage/infection. The Doctor said I might have the mumps, but when I pointed out the white spot inside my cheek, she said that it was the parotid duct. They did bloodwork to test for Amylase, and it was 472. They called me yesterday and said that I have the mumps. The ONLY symptom is a blocked/infected parotid duct. Can that, alone, raise my Amylase level?
Hello, thanks for writing in. If there is suspicion of parotid duct blockage - a possible cause can be a stone, infection, stricture or an external compression of the duct. A rise in Amylase signals inflammation of the parotid, which maybe a cause or consequence of duct disease. A correlation with your symptoms is important to guide further management and treatment. Hope this answers your question. Take care.
