Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a perforated ear drum and am have been prescribed ciprodex ear drops. I have been using the drops for four days and have not had any improvement. Hearing is extremely limited out of the ear, and my entire face is numb since taking the ear drops. Am I having a reaction to the ciprodex, and should I discontinue?
Ciprodex contains antibiotic ciprofloxacin and steroid Dexamethasone. Hence there is a possibility of aggravation of infection if the offending organism is not sensitive to ciprofloxacin; hence need to be discontinued. Ideally, ear discharge should be sent for culture & sensitivity to determine the causative organism and its sensitivity pattern, so that a suitable antibiotic could be started. Pending culture report empirically suitable antibiotic ear drop (preferably aminoglycoside gentamicin to cover potential pseudomonas infection) should be started. Ciprofloxacin ear drop may sometimes cause a local reaction to say transient irritation, burning, stinging, inflammation, angioneurotic edema, dermatitis. Consult your ENT specialist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
