Does Contraceptive Pills Causes Weight Gain?

age 23, height 5'7 (broad built) weight: 80kgs.
polycystic ovaries were detected a year or something ago. Didn't take any hormonal medication the doctor gave. Have had emergency contraceptive pills 5-6 times in life, do you think that has caused the weight gain and the syndrome?

Hello there,
Thank you for the question.
The emergency contraceptive pill is as the name suggest only for emergencies and should be used sparingly. Although there is no evidence that this pill causes polycystic ovaries but it does bring an imbalance in the hormonal milieu and may predispose one to irregular periods maybe for some months after taking the pill. You weight gain does not seem to be the effect of emergency contraceptive pill. Rather I am of the opinion that weight is the reason why you have polycystic ovaries. If you lose even 2-3 kgs in a month you may get regular periods. Try to include exercise as a part of routine and increase intake fresh vegetables and reduce carbohydrate content of meals. It will help you lose weight and reduce the symptoms of PCO.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
