Does Dampened Hearing Due To Hard Slap On Your Ear Mean A Burst Ear Drum ?

Say you got slapped hard on your ear and after, your hearing was dampened. You can still hear but not as well, everything is sort of under water or stuffed with cotton. Does that indicate a burst ear drum? How long will it take for that to heal? Will the hearing just come back to normal?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello, thank you for writing HCM.

A hard slap/ blow on the ear causes many damages to the ear anatomy starting for rupture-tympanic membrane perforation to disoriented middle ear bones (malleus, incus and stapes). The hearing ability will get lowered and some people feel pain for few hours.
One need to consult an ENT doctor for otoscopy and audiologist for middle ear disorders and hearing testings. Depending upon the severity of hearing loss and TM perforation, the correct treatment will be prescribed.

Thank you
