Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother was admitted to the hospital yesterday with an abscess that needed to be treated. they did their regular blood tests and have now diagnosed him with diabetes. He was a heavy meth user until approximately 4 years ago. can his prior meth use cause him to develop diabetes? thank you
Hello. Good day. Thanks for writing to HCM. I am Dr Praveen and I will be answering your query today.
Prior meth use is not a risk factor for diabetes. Diabetes can result due to a variety of drugs but meth is not one of them. He probably has type 2 diabetes which is a result of genetics+lifestyle. It results in a decrease in insulin effectiveness and a relative deficiency. Patients with diabetes are known to have a higher amount of skin infections. He needs to be on medications, exercise and a diet for control.
Wishing him good health. Warm regards.
