Does Exposure To Black Mold Cause Severe Cough And Nasal Congestion?

we just moved my granddaughter4 and daughter 25 back in our house. they have black mold in the heater /air unit it was in the 4 year olds closet and bed, what are the symptoms of long black mold exposure. I think this has been a problem way before their 2 years of renting this place , and think the Land Lord just covered it up. My 4 year old grand daughter is coughing a lot, stuffy nose, congested and she s sleeping more than normal. He mom my daughter I coughing a lot and congested. I took them both to the local ER and all they said was upper repertory infection, just by looking at them no test were done

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe cough and nasal congestion which could be due to allergies to black mold , hay fever , nasal polyps , chemical exposures , chronic sinusitis , tumors and a deviated septum. In your case it seems to be allergic reaction. Need not to worry. Apply warm compresses on nose , keep your head elevated while sleeping, take steam and take benadryl twice a day. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan , nasal endoscopy , viral culture test and blood tests . Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or anti viral depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestant or expectorant . Doctor may also prescribe anti allergic or recommend surgery in case of deviated nasal septum or nasal polyp.
