Does Flu Cause Pain In The Throat And Ears?

Hello. I went to the doctor yesterday for acute body aches and fatigue. My ears and throat hurt but he said they were clear, as were my sinuses. He did a rapid flu test , but it was negative. He said he s convinced I have the flu and prescribed Tamiflu. I ve never had the flu, so not sure what to expect. My throat is VERY sore today, and my ears still hurt. I m exhausted and achy. My son has cystic fibrosis so he was started on tamiflu as well. I m wondering now if I could have the flu and something else, or something else altogether. Does flu cause throat and ear pain?

Hello

All your symptoms suggest that you have a flu.
For the ear pain it also can be caused by the flu, especially if you have a sore throat because there's a canal connects the back of the nose and the throat to the middle ear (the Eustachian tube).
The flu is a viral infection normally should be gone in 7 days.
Starting you and your son on tamiflu (antiviral medication) is a good option, especially because of your son's condition needs a specific precaution to avoid getting him sick, but it will be better if he has his shot of influenza vaccine to prevent the flu.
I suggest that you trust your doctor, have some rest and try to have hot drinks and soup and you will be alright.

Hope I answered your question
Wish you a speedy recovery
Best regards
Dr. Noor Farid
