Does Homocysteine Cause Positive Test Results For ANA?
Hi Dr. Rynne! My name is Rose and I m 41yrs old! My question Is it possible to have a positive ANA, but not have a autoimmune disease? I keep getting a positive ANA, but testing negative for the major autoimmune diseases like Lupus and RA! I do have something called homocysteine, but I m not sure if that s why my ANA is positive!
A negative ANA reading means no auto-antibodies are present in the body. However, a positive ANA reading alone does not indicate an autoimmune disease. The production of ANA is age-dependent and it increases in production by 10 to 35% in persons over the age of 65 years. Even healthy people with viral infections can have a positive ANA. Some medications can cause a positive ANA. Other conditions, such as cancer, can cause a positive ANA. Hence, kindly get evaluated once again properly. Hope the information provided would be useful.

Does Homocysteine Cause Positive Test Results For ANA?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. Homocysteine levels has nothing to do with ANA levels to be positive. The antibodies that target “normal” proteins within the nucleus of a cell are called antinuclear antibodies (ANA). The presence of large amount of ANAs can indicate an autoimmune disease like lupus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, juvenile arthritis, mixed connective tissue disease, drug-induced lupus and autoimmune hepatitis.
